Newly refinished hardwood needs time to cure before returning to full use. Follow the finish manufacturer's requirements for walking, furniture placement, rugs and cleaning rather than assuming the floor is ready once the surface feels dry.
Routine cleaning should remove grit before particles scratch the finish. Use a soft broom, microfiber system or vacuum attachment designed for hard flooring.
Clean spills promptly, and avoid letting standing water remain on hardwood. Use cleaning products compatible with the installed finish, because harsh chemicals, waxes, or unsuitable products can leave residue or damage the coating.
Furniture pads help reduce scratches beneath chairs, tables and other movable pieces. Entry mats can capture dirt and grit before abrasive particles reach the floor, but use rubber or other non-breathable backing only when it's compatible with the finish.
Indoor humidity management also helps reduce excessive seasonal movement. Wood naturally responds to environmental changes, so maintaining reasonable indoor conditions supports both the boards and finish.
